  Or you could make the circle an arc.
  You will then (hopefully) be able to extrude that as a sheet metal model

  I sketched a circle and extruded it.  Then converted it into sheet metal model so I could get the flat pattern.

  Two 180 degrees arcs together did not work.  An arc ?? where the gap is on the order of the material thickness did not work.  Arcs with larger gaps worked (extrude into solid, then convert).  Still testing Chris'.

  I'm surprised you could not extrude n arc with a small gap. It works for me.

  I didn't extrude it.  I had a solid cylinder (or one with a thin flat strip) and tried to convert it.

  The unwrap looks like it worked.
  
  Please tell me how to get the resulting curves into a drawing or sketch.

  it is not very convinient to unwrap closed surfaced for now, because you need to split them first and orient internal coordinate system correctly
