Improvements to Onshape - April 28th, 2023

Closing up April with a bang! For the second time this month Onshape brings more improvements to the product. Improvements to PCB Studio, the UI, and drawings quality of life are some of the highlights of this release.

CAD IMPROVEMENTS

PCB STUDIO IMPROVEMENTS

PCB Studio supports data exchange between mechanical and electronics engineers. Updates from the original PCB imported into the PCB Studio can be pushed to the existing Onshape Assembly, instead of creating a new Assembly.

REVISIONS, PART NUMBERS, AND PROPERTIES IN ASSEMBLY LIST

You can now choose to show the part and sub-assembly status of anything you insert into an Assembly. This includes part number, state, and instance revision.

SURFACE EDGE REPRESENTATION

Certain operations like Loft and Boundary surface can sometimes turn an edge's analytical curve into splines.  Curve data is now preserved so that, for example, measurements reveal the original arc or curve data.

DRAWING IMPROVEMENTS

EXCLUDE FROM SECTION VIEW

When creating or editing section views, you can now exclude parts from being broken out for clarity.
https://onshape.wistia.com/medias/g1asurutxl

PARTIAL SECTION VIEW EDITS

You can now edit partial section views so that the section line moves to the inside of the two association points initially defined.
https://onshape.wistia.com/medias/decc1ei5cg

AUXILIARY VIEW IMPROVEMENTS

A new set of Drawing properties panel controls are available for Auxiliary views for ANSI vs ISO style choices.
https://onshape.wistia.com/medias/2tn5ko93y4

MIN MAX TOLERANCES

Drawing dimensions, Chamfer dimensions, and Hole callout dimensions now allow for MIN and MAX tolerance types.

GENERAL IMPROVEMENTS

ALLOW COMMA INPUT FOR DECIMAL SEPARATOR

For people in the US, using a period (.) is standard notation when delimiting decimals. For many others, the comma (,) is the standard; we have added a setting in your account preferences that allows you to change the standard used.

SHARE, LABEL & DELETE UI

We have enhanced the experience of scrolling through documents by adding shortcuts in the UI that allow you to share, delete, and label data more intuitively. We have also added clarity when deleting groups of documents. Now, if you do not have delete permissions for any of the selected documents, an information message provides insight on which documents you can or cannot delete.

‘MOVE TO’ DIALOG IMPROVEMENTS

Move documents, publications, and folders are now presented in alphabetical order.

MULTI TAB EXPORT

You can now optionally apply Export rules to the zip folder content, where it was previously only applied to the zip folder.

https://onshape.wistia.com/medias/cw5o0acgph

EDU IMPROVEMENTS

IMPROVED CLASS DASHBOARD PERFORMANCE

Class dashboards now filter out:
1. Draft assignments
2. Assignments that were deleted without any modeling in them

ONSHAPE MOBILE

FULL SUPPORT FOR PUBLICATIONS

On mobile devices (Android and iOS), it is now possible to create Publications or update references of items contained within the Publication.
https://onshape.wistia.com/medias/h3sec0sg99#

CONFIGURATION PANEL FOR iOS

View-only Configuration tables appear in Part Studios and Assemblies with configured data.  This is helpful when understanding the rules that drive configurations and for viewing Custom properties related to each configured item.
https://onshape.wistia.com/medias/adzzyc0n6h

LABELS IN SIDEBAR

in Onshape for iOS, an expandable Label list is found in the sidebar of the Documents page to filter Documents by one or more user-defined labels.

RENDER STUDIO IMPROVEMENTS

3D PRINTING APPEARANCE

A new 3D printing appearance, bump map and texture are available in the appearance picker in Render Studio.

    ‘MOVE TO’ DIALOG IMPROVEMENTS

Wow!  I feel like I have been waiting an eternity for this.  That 3d printed appearance looks great!  All those part numbers and revisions in the assembly tree is really going to save on right clicking for me!  This is a really great update.

PS. We need an extra setting in the 3d printed appearance.  Blobs deposition frequency and stringiness density!  :p

The assembly tree update is going to be a big time and sanity saver. Many other great updates to drawings etc...

I wasn't expecting this until next week. Always keeping us on our toes.

Nice job. I'm also happy about more info in the instance tree. My workaround has been to have the BOM table open, with Rev all the way to the left, and to include the PN in the Name of every part.

I don't know if it is an European thing only, but I prefer comma as a decimal separator so I'm most excited about that update this time!
I'm wondering if I can switch back to this or I'm too used to typing points though (habits die hard)... :D

ChatGPT 4.0 has some thought about the newest Onshape update

    🎉🎈 Onshape Update: April 28th, 2023 – The Coffee Conundrum ☕️🤔🎈🎉

Oh, happy day! Onshape's latest update has arrived with more goodies than a pinata at a birthday party! 🎂💥 But, amidst the celebration, we have one pressing question. 🤔

👩‍💻 First, let's raise a toast to the incredible Onshape developers! 🥂 Their tireless efforts brought us breathtaking PCB Studio improvements, mesmerizing Assembly list revelations, and a whirlwind of drawing enhancements that'll make you feel like you're at an art gallery on a sugar high! 🍭🎨

🍎 Onshape Mobile users, you too can bask in the glow of these updates, now featuring Publications, Configuration panels for iOS, and Labels in the sidebar, ready to filter documents like a master detective! 🔍🕵️‍♀️

🌠 And let's not forget the pièce de résistance – Render Studio's snazzy new 3D printing appearance, bump map, and texture, making every render look like it's ready for the runway! 💃

Now, as much as we're over the moon with these fantastic improvements, we have to ask… Dear Onshape developers, why oh why didn't you include a function to automatically order coffee when we press F5 to see the newest update? ☕️🖥️

Imagine the joy of sipping on a fresh cup of coffee while exploring the latest CAD features! Surely, combining caffeine and creativity is a recipe for success. 😄

So, fellow Onshapers, let's celebrate these marvelous updates while pondering the coffee conundrum. 🤷‍♂️ Try the new features, leave your thoughts (and maybe your favorite coffee orders) below, and remember – these updates are live for all users when creating new Documents and will soon be brewing in older Documents. 📜

Great work! Love the updates. Alphabetical order  <3
But also agree with John McClary that being able to select which properties are displayed in the tree would be even better. In our company, we really only need to see the revision letter. Part number is already part of the "file name" and release state is already indicated by the triangle, dots or blue circle.

The comma! :o - Instantly enabled! Thought this was technically impossible due to the engine not liking to work with commas, very happy to see it actually wasn't as this has been a pain ever since I started using OS.
Rest are excellent improvements, looking forward to using them! Keep it up

I love the min/max tolerance. It seems simple but saves having the type it into the box. We need limits and fits added to have the full set of tolerance selections.

Great work! I'm glad to hear that you're also pleased with the additional information in the instance tree. To work around the lack of information in the instance tree, I've been keeping the BOM table open with the revision information displayed on the left and including the part number in the name of every part.

I recently discovered that even when the decimal separator is set to a comma, we can still use a period.
That's fantastic news! I've been so accustomed to using the point, and it'll undoubtedly take some time for me to adapt my muscle memory.

Many nice updates! Especially happy for revision number added to multi-export files. But exporting an assembly with all subassemblies and associated drawings in their chosen released state in different formats (typically pdf and dwg of drawings and step of parts and assemblies) could still be made easier. I want to be able to do this with as few clicks as possible.

    Oh my Gosh!

Finally, you allow me the use of commas..... for me, even that I use English language in Onshape, this is a real game changer.
Hopefully, I can re-adept quickly…. You know, muscle memory.

    Thank you very much!

Maybe the use of enhanced character set in variable names would be nice too… but I want to avoid nerving ;-)

Many nice updates! What about enabling both the comma and the dot for all users as a decimal separator? Other software I use has this function and it works like a charm.
If you have the comma setting on, you can still enter numbers with periods; period-only is still default because our quantity parameters (like your extrude depth and pattern count and such) can accept almost any FeatureScript expression. For example, max(#length, 1in) /* at least 1in */ is a valid (if overly verbose ) expression. FS has syntactic meanings for commas, of which being a decimal separator isn't one, so we have to impose some minor spacing rules when comma-separated numbers are allowed in expressions. Such a departure from FS syntax is better kept opt-in, plus there could be confusion with thousands separators.

Thanks for the many great updates,

Is there any chance to search the part number in the tab just like searching the part number in the assembly list?

And I hope we have a function to check the assembly gap between all parts. sometime the assembly didn't have interference but the gap is too small. the may have some problems it's hard to check all the gaps.
