Improvements to Onshape - June 12th, 2017

edited June 2017 in New in Onshape
In this latest update we have focused on the improvement requests sent in by you, our customers, and the overall performance and stability of Onshape - specifically drawings. Customers who have submitted tickets that are addressed by improvements in this release will be notified in the coming days. If you have improvement requests, please submit your ideas here. Let us know what you think.

WELD SYMBOLS

Both ANSI and ISO weld symbols can now be added to drawings. The sheet standard you use determines the weld standard and dialog layout. Spot and seam welds, second fillet, symmetric and staggered welds are currently not supported, but will be added in a future update.

DIMENSION HIDDEN LINES

Sometimes, adding dimensions to hidden lines or adding centerlines to hidden holes makes a drawing easier to understand. Now, in Onshape drawings, you can if you wish (even if it is not good practice).

SHEET METAL BEND NOTES

Now when you create a drawing of a sheet metal flat pattern by either right-clicking the flat pattern view of the model or by selecting the flat pattern filter in the Insert View dialog, bend notes are automatically shown next to each bend line.

DRAWING VIEW PRIORITY

You can now set the priority of a drawing view for both viewing and selection. This is useful if two drawing views are on top of one another and you want to select the view below. This priority setting also applies to images so you can place views on top of images to create effects like watermarks.

DRAWING THUMBNAIL

Drawing thumbnail images are now displayed on the Documents page and also in the tab previews inside a Document. This will make it much easier to determine which Document or tab you need before opening it. The image displayed is of the Drawing when it was last modified or closed, so for multi-sheet drawings you will see the sheet you viewed last.

Please take a moment to try out these new features and improvements and let us know what you think!

Remember: The updates listed here are now live for all users when creating new Documents and over the next few days these features will also be available in Documents created before the date of this update.

The bend notes is a great improvement but would be better if we had the ability to edit so we could add the bend line dimension.

@terry_pipkin Are you perhaps referring to adding the bend allowance to the note, or something else?

    Nice update for 2D people.

@PeteYodis currently the bend note reflects bend up or down and the bend radius. We typically note something like (bend down 90 deg @ 1.00" o.s.) so it would be a big help to edit to reflect the bend line dimension. Only because our break press operators act as if they can't read but 1 view of the drawing. It may just be wishful thinking on my part but figured it wouldn't hurt to suggest.

Receiving notification about Onshape updates and reading excitedly what new toys we've just got reminds me of my childhood.
    Thanks, and keep up! :)

I like the drawing updates. I just started working on a drawing and the linking to the original document is like a breath of fresh air compared to Solidworks. And these improvements are good to have as I enter Onshape Drawings, Thanks!

Great Job with the updates!   I know dimensioning hidden lines is not popular with the purists, but I am loving the elimination of  multiple views because of it. Good Job!

    @NeilCooke
It would take at least hydraulic press to flatten me into 2D

ps. Did you know you also have an 3D alter-ego? @NeilCooke3D B)

Admit it, you were expecting my comment when you wrote that 2D description >:)

Could these updates be why it no longer exports dxf and dwg files?
  • NeilCookeNeilCooke Moderator, Onshape Employees Posts: 5,680
@MotorcycleWriter it's working ok for me. If you are having issues please raise a support ticket.

Excellent work on ALL of your drawing updates!

Was hoping to see blocks or insert sketches, but these improvements are very valuable to us.

OnShape made it exactly like SW, (sorry for comparing you to such a garbage program OS), but when we dimension bend lines, it is based of the process and order of the bend, rather than a datum point or ordinate dimension. So to have @ 1.00... my question would be .. 1.00" from where?

So if OS does add that feature, please make it an option we can also turn off.

Great job on the weld symbols!  Dimensions to hidden line also extremely useful.
    Many thanks

@keith_waggoner the thumbnail shows the last tab you modified.

@keith_waggoner : There is an existing improvement request to designate which tab's image is used as the document thumbnail . See https://forum.onshape.com/discussion/comment/25086#Comment_25086 . Feel free to up vote, if this is something you want as well. Thanks.

    Nice updates.

Are dual dimensions in already, or coming soon?

I have a client who's willing to switch to Onshape, except that they use dual dimensions on all their drawings.  (I've tried to convince them to choose either metric or inch for each drawing, but... no luck.)

    Thanks

@a_dandler Dual dimensions are in the plans.  We know they are important for many drawing users.

Can we get the ability to switch the bend call out for the angle by switching the complimentary angle call out from the outside to the inside of the bend? When making a bend shown in the image I need to call out 135 degrees on my draft to be entered in the Trumpf press brake.

    Thank you

    @bryan_lagrange
Please make an improvement request for it. Would you want the complementary angle interface to be a per model setting / per workspace/ user preference, all of the above?
  • bryan_lagrangebryan_lagrange Member, User Group Leader Posts: 825 ✭✭✭✭✭
I would have to go with user preference. You would want a global setting so you can set it once and every time a bend direction is called out, it would be how you need it.
