Onshape AI Advisor Beta (Coming Soon)

S1monS1mon Member Posts: 3,296 PRO

I just watched the recorded stream of the Quarterly What's New, and @GregBrown and @cody_armstrong added a "One more thing…" near the end:

I'm very interested to see this, as I've been using ChatGPT more and more for certain things. When I first started, the hallucinations (AKA BS) were sometimes painful, but now with "deep research" and 4o, I have to say that it's often pretty amazing the level of information and synthesis that's possible. I can see this being very useful. Any chance we'll hear more about the platform used to develop this Onshape functionality?

What I'm really hoping for as this expertise is built at Onshape is to see an AI tool for helping with FeatureScript.

BTW, please make the "one more thing…" a tradition with these streams. It will definitely make them even more worthwhile to watch.

    .

I'm really excited about where this is going.

When it eventually comes to other Onshape studios, I'm hoping it will be able to suggest workflows and solutions like:

    • To do this, you can use the Arena integration.
    • Here are the steps to do this with Onshape's native features (10 steps). However, here are some Custom features I found that can do this in one step.
    • Onshape doesn't natively support this kind of simulation, however here are some integrated apps that do.
    • For this, you will need a top down hybrid approach. Start by creating a variable studio, next create a part studio with skeleton sketches. Etc…

    .

They mentioned they wanted it closed source so that they could control the solutions, but perhaps there could be a checkbox to "Search public forums" which would also let it search the forum for answers since there are tons of use cases and great questions on the forums that are not covered within the learning center.

It would be especially useful if it had access to:

notebooklm is google AI based on gemini and in the end, it'll produce a podcast based on your prompts.

I've been playing around with notebooklm AI to learn how to build a website using deno 2 and it blows me away at how easy AI digests of a ton of data and then focus's on how to build a specific website based on what you want. It makes it really easy.

For fun, I prompted "describe how to structure a parametric design project for product development" and the results were terrible. My next prompt "ignore autodesk and focus on PTC, onshape & solidworks". The results always included BIM and architectural references and never gave credit to parametric technology corporation or it's history. Sadly, the results were always dominated by autodesk and something I wasn't interested in. It did describe parameters, design intent, sketches and a simplistic overview of parametrics. For more fun, to blow things up, I asked when to use in context design. Things started to unhinge and made no sense.

If you're going to build a LM for parametrics as we know it, you'll have to come up with better data, the internet seems to be dominated by poor data. I think you'll need to scan this forum & include PTC's forum which might build a good LM AI system.

I believe the future will be companies flooding the internet with great content or building upon a great source of data.

Ultimately I would like to prompt "give me an example for in context use when designing a parametric model" and have some legit thoughts come back.

notebooklm will create a podcast based on your prompts AI generated podcast about parametrics

to get this to play on my mac, I had to open it with "quicktime" player and not the default "music" player.

I just used AI Advisor to help me find some info on patterning that I couldn't quickly find with Google. It doesn't seem quite as capable as, say, ChatGPT 4o, but it's definitely helpful for digging through all the deep info available in the Forums, Tips, and Learning center.

I'm very hopeful. This will only get better.

On the flip side, this interaction is unfortunate. I'd like to see something which would highlight custom features like Attractor Pattern, or Selection Fillet, or some of the others which are harder to just stumble across.

I just tried to answer a very basic question about entering sketcher using the AI Advisor. It does a decent job, but a couple issues:

    • Cutting and pasting into a forum post doesn't carry over formatting very well - I had to clean it up
    • There are links to the learning center which no longer work, or are hallucinated

    See post for details:

thanks @S1mon for the feedback. We have removed the dead link and are looking into ways to improve copy/paste behavior. We are also looking into ways to highlight a larger list of custom features. If you are not already, I would encourage you to also use the feedback (1-5 stars) in the Onshape AI Advisor as we are watching that closely, and are actively working to improve the quality and depth of answers provided.

It might be nice if the citations would give a little more context, similar to what ChatGPT does (see image). Previews of the links when you roll over the numbers would be a start. It could be nice to have some shorthand like [help], [learning center], [tech tip], or [blog], etc.

One of the big challenges with resources on the Onshape site, or external to the site is that so much stuff ends up being obsolete because of the amazing velocity of new and updated features. I don't know if more recent citations are being weighted higher, but including the publishing or creation date of the citation would help the us find the right answers.

Just used it quite a bit and made sure to leave star feedback.

Some things it answered really well, then other things it would completely miss. It was able to answer about 1 out of 5 questions well.
However, it consistently gave incorrect links.

Also, I can't see my chat history when I go back to check all the questions I asked.
