Appearance Deletion Example Needed

OK, this is really frustrating. I seem to find "answers" to my question but I can't for the life of me get a "delete" option in the menus from the face appearances in the right panel.
These three threads all stop at the assumption that I can figure out how to get that menu+delete to show up. I feel like a doofus, but I gotta ask for someone to share one of those nifty short animated gifs of what I'm doing wrong--or something.

The main reason I want to delete these is so when I export there aren't any materials included.
