Is there a way to make a model from Drawing?

kristen_harmonkristen_harmon Member Posts: 2
In Maya you can import a drawing onto an image plane and build your model based on that design.  I can't see how to follow that same work flow in onshape.  I"m sure it exists, but I haven't found it yet.  Is it possible to do something like this example file of the airplane?

    No it doesn't exist yet.

This is desperately needed so put in your request with top right.

What are you thoughts on format DWG/DXF, .AI(illustrator) or other ?

    Bitmap formats (Jpeg, png)
    vector formats (dwg, dxf, .ai)

but .ai should import as curves not a gazzillion line segments

+1 for sketch images with easy scaling (drag in sketch environment, or similar)

Thanks for getting back to me with your answer.  I'm disappointed that Onshape can't make import images yet, but it will get there in time.  It's a really remarkable approach to model building and I can't wait to really dive in.

As far as image format goes, I would like the vector formats as much as the next guy, but I really care about the bitmap formats so I could import a drawing that I did from hand.

png&svg as a minimum. So we can trace photos and vector drawings.

I'll second the formats that Kevin Quigley proposed.  However, I tend to receive more .pdf files than .ai

+1 for PNG (or JPEG or any raster for that matter) and especially DXF/DWG, AI, SVG... Anything so I can get a logo or text into my designs. I've got people asking me to get signage and other nifty branded things cut on the water jet. :)

It's November 2016 and there is still no import from PNG or other bitmap ... in order to trace in a sketch

You can do this now, but you have to manually trace the profile though...
