Awesome! I had a sneaking suspicion OS was going to buy CloudMilling, when there were no updates from its developer for a while...

I will finally be able to rid myself of that other CAD system!

IMO, if you include this (but somewhat limited in some way) in the hobby version, it will grow OS quite a bit amongst the hobby users, which may lead to more Basic and Professional sales.

We need some time to sort out a few topics. CloudMilling offered a very compelling solution already. So we are not starting from scratch. Our #1 priority is to make this available to our users as soon as possible.

At the same time have learned from our experiences with Render Studio and PCB Studio. There is quite a bit of work required to go from a 3rd party, independent App, to a proper, Onshape tab. Security, hosting, development tools etc.. There is a lot of under the hood infrastructure that is needed.

In addition there are decisions on the UI. Over time It will become more and more like the Onshape UI. But we can likely iterate and evolve that over time. That is it is likely we can make a few compromises, with time to market vs 100% conformation to all of the Onshape UI.

Do you have any thoughts/recommendations for Posts? Cloud Milling is based on ModuleWorks. ModuleWorks offers a comprehensive post infrastructure. We have some decision to make as to how to best offer posts to our customers. So I am all ears.

CAM Studio will cover all major categories of subtractive manufacturing. It will start with traditional 2-5 axis milling, turning. For sheetmetal the 2 axis capabilities will work. However more streamlined worklfows with nesting and a few other efficiencies will come as well.

@joep. CAM Studio will support assemblies and Part Studio. Fixturing, machine simulation, and more... The product already supports multipart machining. This was one of the more interesting aspects of Cloud Milling.

That's actually how my company bought OS. I played around with the free version for a few weeks on my own. I ended up really liking it, then I showed it to the boss and we bought a couple of licenses.

With new CAM programs, CNC Lathes always end up forgotten. The emphasis always seems to be on milling.

To echo NikNYC's comment will CAM studios be restricted to pro licenses, I know there teams at my school that do cad in onshape but are forced to export to fusion 360 for CAM at the moment, would be fantastic if we and teams like use were able to do everything in one ecosystem, looks super cool otherwise, looking forward to it!!!

The goal, in general, is to cover all mainstream CAM workflows. As with everything, it will be an evolution. The product starts with a very good foundation of 2-5 axis milling. Which means 2D machining is already there. However there are many opportunities for more streamlined workflows specific for the task, nesting is an example of this.

I agree, this is great news but alas, as a retired engineer who tinkers I can't really justify buying a pro license for my hobby usage. Will have to keep exporting to Fusion360, sigh.

@joe_dunne this would be a huge win for the many FRC teams (including us!) that use Onshape as our primary design environment but have to export to Fusion360 to manufacture parts. Any plans to make this accessible to us edu users? Thanks!

I hesitate to set expectations, as far as dates. Suffice to say our priority is to get this in our customers hands as soon as possible. We are in the middle of projects that must be completed before we can open it up to our customers. These projects do not lend themselves to updates or announcements. They involve what I would call the back-end, plumbing of the application. Things like implementing Onshape versioning system, security systems, logging systems, general development processes.. These projects are prerequisites before we can allow customer access. These are not insignificant projects.

The next major milestone will be Beta. We will be looking for customers willing to help give us feedback and test CAM Studio at that point.
