In order to do that our department would have to maintain and PAY for a license to one of those programs. No sense in switching to free if you still have the bill to pay.

I've contacted Ken multiple times before about plans with either the answer that they were working on it or no response at all. Not an issue now since he sold Simsolid to Altair.

I've tried SimScale and have been less than impressed thus far. Maybe I need to try it again.

@brian_brady - As Eduardo said, one of the nice things about Simscale is that it is free for public documents - this is a great way to try-out/learn what is in actuality a very high end multi-physics app.
I also like Simsolid, very innovative.

Totally makes sense, free is hard to beat, especially when, in my humble opinion, Onshape does CAD better than most.

thought I had better save before I printed. now I have to rebuild to show views again, two of us waiting as another user wants write access to a part but are waiting for rebuild so I can save and close. Don't you love "SeldomWorks"

Found out Solidworks pretends to override a bend radius, after all this time I never double checked the radius after rebuilding (ctrl+q)
No wonder parts have been off every once in a while...

Another happy story thanks to Onshape.

Today we had a few new customers fly in to meet our company and hopefuly bring us more work.

They are mostly interested in our spiral chutes, which is the only product we have where we do it exclusivly in Onshape. Because of the speed and accuracy.

Anyways after a long demo in the shop with our demo chutes. My boss hints to them we can draw up anything you need just give us a few parameters and he'll have a drawing for you before we get back to the conference room. So I raised an eyebrow and said challenge accepted. They spit out a few numbers and I casually walked to my desk and calmly crunched them into a spreadsheet. Took the output of that and coppied that into a custom featurescript. Hit commit, went to take a leak while Onshape crunched the numbers.

Came back and did a couple tweaks. Figured I still have plently of time, added a few brakets and chased holes.

Created an assembly drawing with a few dims and print. They walk into the conference room as I pull the print from the printer.

I never could be so cocky with Solidworks. I doubt I could have pack and go'd that fast.

Then we did 3 more revisions at the conference table while they talked.

Thanks Onshape, you made us look GOOD.

How many lines was the FeatureScript, and how long did it take to generate?

The featurescript is mostly a bunch of global variables and equations.

Then a few parametric voodo tricks that really only work this flawlessly in Onshape. (I've tried some of these tricks in SW, and it breaks references too easy)

In the end, it is a couple minor tweaks now. I owe a lot to Onshape's support especially lou and pete. They were johnny on the spot with bug fixes and even threw in a few modeling tricks I would never have guessed. Speeding up the model and making it very stable.

Here is a weird one, doesn't hurt anything, but still a new glitch I haven't seen before.

The affect is different depending on which surface you select to rotate, some are fine.
The center of rotation is even in a weird place off some surfaces... Solidworks...

Had to record with a cell phone, because the screen capture frame rate didn't show the ghosting affect.

How do you work without power, do you have a laptop? And how do get internet if the router has no power or do you use mobile internet?

Edit:
OH figured it out... I changed the stock width to .75" which made the construction line to the origin for centering the sketch zero-length...
I guess I got used to Onshape just not caring if sketch lines are zero length, and just working as you expect.
